Axle Shaft: Service and Repair
Rear Axle

REAR

Civic 4WD Wagon

1.

Raise and support rear of vehicle.

2.

Remove wheel and brake drum.

3.

Disconnect brake line from wheel cylinder, then plug line and open cylinder port.

4.

Remove brake shoes and disconnect parking brake cable from backing plate.

5.

Remove 4 nuts securing axle retainer.

6.

Remove axle assembly from housing using suitable slide hammer attached to opposite wheel lugs.

7.

Pry axle seal from housing, taking care not to damage housing.

8.

Install new seal in housing using suitable driver, then coat seal lip with grease.

9.

If axle shaft, bearing or backing plate is replaced, select adjusting shim as follows:

a. Measure and record width of axle bearing outer race.
b. Measure and record thickness of backing plate at mounting surface.
c. Measure and record depth of bearing pocket from edge of axle housing surface to bearing seating surface.

d. Add dimensions obtained in steps b and c and subtract sum from dimension measured in step a. Refer to Fig. 1, and select appropriate shim.

Apply thin coat of suitable sealer to housing flange and shim contact faces of backing plate and axle shaft retainer. Do not apply sealant to lower
holes of flange or raised portion of shim. Use HONDA sealant 08740-99986 or equivalent, assemble components within 20 minutes of
applying sealant and allow 30 minutes for sealant to cure before filling housing.

11.

Apply sealant to inner corner of bearing seating surface in housing, then position backing plate and shim on axle housing.

12.

Insert axle assembly into housing, then align axle splines with differential side gear splines, and axle retainer with studs on housing.

13.

Seat bearing in housing using suitable slide hammer bearing against axle flange.

14.

Torque retaining nuts to 30 ft. lbs., repeat remaining procedure to complete installation, then bleed brakes and fill axle housing to specified level.
