Cruise Control Surges, Speedometer Is Erratic, or MIL Is On With DTC P0501
SYMPTOM
The vehicle surges only when using the cruise control. Also, the speedometer may be erratic, or the MIL may be on with DTC P0501 (vehicle speed
sensor malfunction) stored.
PROBABLE CAUSE
The speed sensor drive gear on the differential is worn.
CORRECTIVE ACTION
Replace the transmission with a remanufactured unit.
WARRANTY CLAIM INFORMATION
In warranty:
The normal warranty applies.
The VSS is covered under the emissions warranty. Except for California, the emissions warranty is 3 years or 36,000 miles. The California emissions
warranty, because the repair requires replacement of an expensive component (the transmission), is 7 years or 70,000 miles.

DIAGNOSIS
1.
Drive the vehicle in D3 ('98 models) or in D with the overdrive off ('99 models).
2.
Set the cruise control at 60 mph on flat ground.

If the vehicle surges while the cruise control is set, go to REPAIR PROCEDURE.

If the vehicle does not surge, troubleshoot other causes.
3.
If the MIL is on, read and clear the DTC.
