Evaporator Core: Service and Repair

1.

Disconnect battery ground cable and discharge A/C system.

2.

Disconnect receiver and suction lines from evaporator, plug lines and open fittings, then remove firewall grommets from evaporator tubes.

3.

On Civic Models, remove glove compartment or passenger tray assembly, if equipped.

4.

On Civic Hatchback and Sedan models, remove glove compartment frame assembly.

5.

Disconnect electrical connector from thermostat.

6.

Loosen sealing band screw, then slide band to the left.

7.

Remove blower housing attaching bolts, then the housing assembly.

8.

Remove evaporator housing attaching bolts, then the evaporator core assembly.

9.

Remove self tapping screw and clip joining evaporator housing, Fig. 22.

10.

Carefully separate evaporator housing, then pull thermostat capillary tube from evaporator core, noting position for installation.

11.

Separate housings and remove evaporator cover.

12.

Remove evaporator and expansion valve, and separate expansion valve from evaporator as needed.

13.

Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:

a. Use new O-rings when installing expansion valve and connecting refrigerant lines.
b. Install expansion valve and secure valve sensor against suction line with tape.
c. Insert thermostat capillary in position noted during removal, ensuring tube makes good contact with core fins.
