Heated Oxygen Sensor: Testing and Inspection

Disconnect oxygen sensor electrical connector.

Start engine and warm up for 2 minutes at 3000 RPM under no load, then raise engine speed to 4000 RPM and release throttle suddenly at least 5
times.

Within one minute after engine has been warmed up, measure voltage between oxygen sensor electrical connector and ground as follows:

a. Raise engine speed to 5000 RPM, then lower to 2000 RPM by operating accelerator pedal and immediately turn ignition switch off. Voltage

should be below 0.4 volt.

b. Disconnect #21 vacuum hose from throttle body, then plug opening in throttle body.
c. Connect hand vacuum pump to open end of vacuum hose and apply 300 mm Hg. (11.8 in. Hg) of vacuum, then start engine and raise speed to

4000 RPM. Voltage should be at least 0.6 volt.

d. If voltage is not as specified in steps a and c, replace oxygen sensor. If it takes more than one minute to complete test, warm up engine as

described in step 2, then repeat test.
