Rear Trailing Arm Bushing Noise (Supersedes 90-017, dated July 6, 1990)
SYMPTOM

A squeaking noise from the rear trailing arm when driving over a speed bump or turning into a driveway. This is most noticeable when the ambient air
temperature is low.

PROBABLE CAUSE

The outer and inner rubber sections of the rear trailing arm bushing are contacting each other.

CORRECTIVE ACTION

Install shims between the inner and outer rubber sections of the trailing arm bushing. (Two shims for each bushing.)

1.

Raise the car, preferably on a wheel-lift type hoist.

2.

Apply silicone spray all over the rubber of the trailing arm bushings and the shims.

3.

From the outboard side of the trailing arm, insert the plastic shim between the inner and the outer rubber sections of the bushing, as shown.

NOTE:

Insert the forward shim first then the rear shim.

Push each shim straight in at the midway point of the slit, otherwise, one of the rubber knob sections located at the upper and lower ends of
the opening may stop the shim from going in completely.

If necessary, push up on the wheel, to load or unload the bushing.

4.

Using an electric soldering gun, melt the straight end of the shim so it cannot work its way out.
