Cannot Adjust Idle Speed To Specification

1. When the idle speed is out of specification and the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) does not blink Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) 14, check

the following items:

-

Adjust the idle speed. 

-

Air conditioning signal

-

Alternator FR signal   

-

A/T gear position signal

-

Starter Switch signal

-

Brake switch signal

-

Power Steering Pressure switch signal [Except Canada]

-

Fast idle thermo valve

-

Hoses and connections

-

Idle Air Control (IAC) Valve and its mounting 0-rings

2. If the above items are normal, substitute a known-good IAC Valve and readjust the idle speed.

3. If the idle speed still cannot be adjusted to specification (and the MIL does not blink code 14) after IAC Valve replacement, substitute a

known-good Engine Control Module (ECM) and recheck. If symptom goes away, replace the original ECM.

NOTE:  On Canadian models the MALFUNCTION INDICATOR WARNING LAMP is the CHECK ENGINE LAMP.

RPM Too High (Warm)

Check in Order Listed 

1. Idle Air Control Valve (IAC) (code 14)
2. Other Idle Controls

a. Fast Idle Valve
b. Idle Adjusting Screw
c. Hoses and Connections
d. Power Steering Pressure (PSP) Switch Signal

3. Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor (code 6)
4. Air Intake System

a. Throttle Cable
b. Throttle Body

5. Engine Control Module (ECM) Unit (BU)

Back-up (BU) code used when the MALFUNCTION INDICATOR WARNING LAMP is on. Jump the service check connector, if no code is
displayed (MALFUNCTION INDICATOR WARNING LAMP stays on steady), the back-up system is in operation.

NOTE:  On Canadian models the MALFUNCTION INDICATOR WARNING LAMP is the CHECK ENGINE LAMP.

RPM Too Low (Warm)

Check According To Following Conditions

1. Idle RPM is below Specification (No Load)

a. Idle Air Control Valve (IAC) (code 14)
b. Idle Adjusting Screw

2. Idle speed does not increase after initial start up

a. Idle Air Control Valve (IAC) (code 14)

3. On models with automatic transmission, the idle speed drops in gear

a. A/T Shift Position Signal 
b. Idle Air Control Valve (IAC)

4. Idle speed drops when air conditioner is on

a. Air Conditioning Signal
b. Idle Air Control Valve (IAC) (code 14) 

5. Idle speed drops when steering wheel is turning

a. Power Steering Pressure Switch Signal
b. Idle Air Control Valve (IAC) (code 14)

6. Idle speed fluctuates with electrical load

a. Idle Air Control Valve (IAC) (code 14)

Back-up (BU) code used when the MALFUNCTION INDICATOR WARNING LAMP is on. Jump the service check connector, if no code is
displayed (MALFUNCTION INDICATOR WARNING LAMP stays on steady), the back-up system is in operation.
