Backup Lamp Switch: Testing and Inspection
Manual Transmission:
1. Turn the ignition switch ON (II), and move the shift lever to [R] position. The back-up lights should come on.
^ If one back-up light does Pot come on, check for a blown bulb in the taillight assembly.
^ If both back-up lights do not come on, check for a blown No. 15 (10 A) fuse in the under-dash fuse/relay box.
^ If the fuse and bulbs are OK, go to step 2.
Switch Test
2. Disconnect the 2P connector from the back-up light switch.
3. With the shift lever in [R], check for continuity between the A and B terminals. There should be continuity.
^ If there is no continuity, replace the switch.
^ If there is continuity, but the back-up lights do not come on, check for:
-
an open in the YEL or GRN/BLK wire.
-
poor ground (G551, G552).
Automatic Transmission:
1. Turn the ignition switch ON (II), and move the shift lever to [R]. The back-up lights should come on.
^ If one back-up light does not come on, check for a blown bulb in the taillight assembly.
^ If both back-up lights do not come on, check for a blown No. 15 (10 A) fuse in the under-dash fuse/relay box.
^ If the fuse and bulbs are OK, go to step 2.
Switch Test
2. Disconnect the 14P connector from the A/T gear position switch (back-up light switch).
3. Move the shift lever back and forth in [R] position without touching the push button, and check for continuity between No. 4 and No. 5 terminals.
There should be continuity within the range of free play of the shift lever.
^ If there is no continuity within the range of free play, adjust the position of the A/T gear position switch.
^ If there is continuity, but the back-up lights do not come on, check for:

an open in the YEL or GRN/BLK wire.
