ABS Hydraulic Component Bleeding and Fluid Service

Relieving Accumulator/Line Pressure

1. Remove bleeder cap from maintenance bleeder on modulator unit, then attach a suitable wrench to bleeder.

2. Connect a rubber tube to bleeder and place other end in a container, Fig. 81.
3. While holding tube in hand, loosen maintenance bleeder 1/8 to 1/4 turn and collect fluid in container.  Do not loosen bleeder too much; brake

fluid is under high pressure and can burst out.

4. Tighten maintenance bleeder to specification.

Brake Fluid Change

1. Relieve brake system pressure as outlined under Relieving Accumulator/Line Pressure.
2. Start engine and allow to idle for one minute, then stop engine.
3. Inspect brake fluid level in reservoir, fluid should be below MAX level line.
4. Repeat steps 1 through 3 until brake fluid has been drained.
5. Remove cap and refill reservoir to MAX level line. Pour brake fluid slowly so that it does not foam, then wait several minutes.
6. Repeat steps 1 through 3 twice, and refill the reservoir to MAX level line with fresh brake fluid.
7. Tighten maintenance bleeder to specification, then start engine and ensure ABS indicator light goes off.
