Wheel Bearing: Service and Repair
Front Suspension
1. Raise and support vehicle.
2. Remove wheel nuts and front wheel, then raise locking tab on spindle nut and remove nut.
3. Remove brake hose mounting bolts, then caliper bracket mounting bolts and hang caliper to one side. To prevent accidental damage to caliper
or brake hose, use a short piece of wire to hang caliper from undercarriage.
4. Remove 6 mm brake disc, retaining screws, then screw two 8 x 1.25 mm bolts into disc to push it away from hub. Turn each bolt two turns at a
time to prevent cocking disc excessively.
5. Remove brake disc from knuckle.
6. Inspect front hub for damage or cracks.
7. On models equipped with ABS, remove wheel sensor wire bracket, then remove wheel sensor from knuckle. Do not disconnect wheel sensor
electrical connector.
8. Clean any dirt or grease off ball joint, then remove cotter pin from tie-rod end ball joint castle nut and remove nut.
9. Install a 10 mm hex nut on ball joint, then ensure hex nut is flush with ball joint pin end to prevent damage to threaded end of ball joint.
10. Apply grease to ball joint remover tool No. 07MAC-SL00200, or equivalent, then insert jaws of tool onto ball joint. Do not damage ball joint
boot.
11. Turn adjusting bolt as necessary to make jaws parallel, then hand-tighten pressure bolt and reinspect jaws to ensure they are parallel.
12. Tighten pressure bolt until ball joint shaft pops loose from steering arm. Use eye protection during this procedure.
13. Remove tool, then remove nut from end of ball joint and pull ball joint out of steering/suspension arm. Inspect ball joint boot and replace it if
damaged.
14. Remove cotter pin from lower arm ball joint castle nut and remove nut.
15. Install a 12 mm hex nut on ball joint. Ensure hex nut is flush with ball joint pin end.
16. Repeat steps 10 through 12 to separate lower arm and knuckle ball joint.
17. Remove cotter pin from upper ball joint castle nut, and remove nut.
18. Install 12 mm hex nut on ball joint. Ensure hex nut is flush with ball joint pin end, or threaded section of ball joint pin might be damaged by ball
joint remover.
19. Repeat steps 10 through 12 to separate upper arm and knuckle ball joint.
20. Pull knuckle outward and remove driveshaft outward joint with suitable plastic hammer, then remove knuckle.
