Out of warranty:
Any repair performed after warranty expiration may be eligible for goodwill consideration by the District Parts and Service Manager or your Zone
Office. You must request consideration, and get a decision, before starting work.
DIAGNOSIS
1.
Locate the shift cable under the dashboard.
2.
Wrap a length of duct tape around the shift cable so you have about 2 feet of tape extending from the cable. Make sure you can safely pull on the
tape while driving.
3.
Test-drive the vehicle to duplicate your customer's complaint. When you hear the noise from under the dashboard, pull on the tape to move the
cable, and listen carefully for any change in pitch or loudness. Repeat this several times.

If the noise changes in pitch or loudness when you move the cable, remove the tape from the cable, and go to REPAIR PROCEDURE.

If there is no change in pitch or loudness when you move the cable, look for other possible causes of the noise, and repair as needed.
REPAIR PROCEDURE
Preparation
You need these items:

Your customer's ignition key for the vehicle.

PGM Tester with 5N3005 or later software on an 8MB program card
NOTE:
Make sure the PGM Tester's setup (current date and Market Destination) is correct before you use it.

Password for the PGM Tester (Ask your service manager for this five-character password, or get it from the Interactive Network (iN) VIN Status
Inquiry display.)

Immobilizer PCM code (This VIN-specific, 4-digit code is available on the iN VIN Status Inquiry display. The code is changed daily, so use it as
soon as you get it.)
Downloading From the Original PCM
1.
Connect the PGM Tester to the 1 6P data link connector (DLC).
2.
Insert the programmed ignition key into the ignition switch, and turn the ignition switch to ON (I I).
3.
From the SYSTEM SELECT screen, select 5:
IMMOBI.
