Use the following information to determine if the alternator is the original equipment or was remanufactured. If it is remanufactured, determine the
month it was remanufactured.

If the alternator was remanufactured in September 1996 or later, go to step 45.
^
If the alternator is the original equipment, or was remanufactured before September 1996, continue to REPAIR PROCEDURE.
^
If the date code cannot be found (missing label, etc.), continue to REPAIR PROCEDURE.
Repair Procedure
Alternator Removal
1.
Start the engine. Check the charging system indicator on the instrument panel. It should go out after the engine starts.

If the indicator remains on, troubleshoot the problem before continuing. Use section 8 of the appropriate service manual, or section 22 of the
ETM.
If this repair requires replacement of the alternator, and the new alternator you are installing was manufactured in September 1996 or later (see
INSPECTION PROCEDURE), there is no need to replace the voltage regulator. Go to step 45.

If the indicator goes out, continue to step 2.

Turn off the engine. Record the customer's radio station presets.
3.
Remove the cable from the battery negative terminal.
