If all the teeth are in good condition, refer to section 8 of the service manual for speedometer troubleshooting.
Repair Procedure
1.
Remove the driven gear by pulling it straight out of the bushing.
2.
Unscrew the VSS from the bushing. Discard the bushing.
3.
Inspect the lubrication hole in the new bushing for a filter screen. If it does not have a filter screen, install the one listed under PARTS
INFORMATION.
4.
Lubricate the new O-ring (see PARTS INFORMATION) with ATF. Install the O-ring in the groove around the bushing.
5.
Lubricate the shaft of the new driven gear with ATF. Insert the driven gear into the bushing.
6.
Insert the bushing and driven gear into the transmission or transfer case. Install the clamp plate on the bushing. Tighten the mounting bolt to 15
Nm (11 lb-ft).
7.
Install the VSS on the bushing, tighten it to 27 N.m (20 lb-ft).
8.
Reconnect the electrical connector to the VSS.
