ENGINE
Excessive Engine Cranking Time After "Hot Soak"
SYMPTOM
More than 2 seconds of cranking time is needed to start the engine after the vehicle is exposed to a hot soak (engine shut off for 30 to 90 minutes after
running at normal temperature).
PROBABLE CAUSE
Fuel injector leak-down rate is not within specification.
CORRECTIVE ACTION
Create a hot soak condition, then check the fuel injector leak-down rate. Replace all fuel injectors if the leak-down rate is not within specification.
1.
Bring the engine up to operating temperature by driving the vehicle at highway speeds for at least 5 minutes. Turn the ignition switch off and park
the vehicle for 30 to 90 minutes.
2.
Using a stopwatch, test the engine cranking time. Start the watch when cranking begins; stop the watch when engine idle begins.
Did the engine begin idling within 2 seconds?
Yes - The fuel pressure is OK.
No - Go to the next step.
3.
Turn the ignition switch off.
4.
Connect the Fuel Pressure Gauge (07406-0040001) and the Fuel Pressure Gauge Adapter (V6) (07RAK-TB4080A) to the Schrader valve in the
fuel injector system:
^
On 1994 and 1995 Passports, the Schrader valve is near the center of the bulkhead, on the horseshoe end of the fuel rail.
