Speedometer and Odometer Inoperative in Passport with M/T and/or 4WD
SYMPTOM
The speedometer and odometer are inoperative.
NOTE:
Repair of an inoperative odometer may be affected by state or local laws.
PROBABLE CAUSE
The speedometer driven gear in the transmission has seized in the bushing.
CORRECTIVE ACTION
Replace the speedometer driven gear and the bushing (see PARTS INFORMATION).
Diagnosis
1.
Locate the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) on the tail housing of the transmission (2WD) or the transfer case (4WD). Disconnect the electrical
connector.
2.
Remove the VSS mounting bolt. Remove the clamp plate and VSS assembly by pulling it straight out.
3.
Inspect the driven gear for missing teeth. Rotate the gear.
^
If any teeth are missing, or the driven gear does not turn freely in the bushing, go to Repair Procedure.
