Safety Recall: 1998 Passport Negative Battery Cable

(Supersedes 98-059, dated August 10, 1998)

BACKGROUND

A ground connection lug was not properly crimped in the supplier's engine wire harness manufacturing line. The improper crimping process caused an
indentation on the lug. The indentation could cause a stress concentration, resulting in a fracture and an open circuit. This open circuit will cause the
engine to stall. In addition, the engine will not start.

CUSTOMER NOTIFICATION

All owners of affected vehicles will be mailed a notification of this recall. An example of the customer letter is at the end of this service bulletin.

Some of the affected vehicles may still be in dealer inventory. By Federal law, these vehicles cannot be sold or leased until they are repaired.

CORRECTIVE ACTION

Replace the negative battery cable.

2.

Disconnect the negative cable from the battery.
