COMPONENT OPERATION

The speed sensor contains a permanent magnet surrounded by a coil of wire. The sensor is mounted in the rear axle housing. An exciter ring is
pressed onto the differential ring gear. Notches in the ring move past the sensor as the rear wheels turn.

AC Voltage Signal

Exciter Ring
As the rear wheels turn, the notches in the exciter ring change the size of the gap between the tip of the speed sensor and the surface of the exciter
ring. As the gap changes, the magnetic field in the sensor changes and an AC voltage signal is induced in the sensor coil.

How Signal Is Sent
The AC voltage signal changes with rear wheel speed. The signal is sent to the Electronic Brake Control Module (EBCM) during braking, the
EBCM checks this signal to determine the average speed of the rear wheels.
