Brake Master Cylinder: Testing and Inspection
These tests will not determine all master cylinder malfunctions. Refer to Diagnosis by Symptom if the problem is not found with these tests.
VISUAL INSPECTION
Visually check for a cracked master cylinder casting or brake fluid around the master cylinder. Leaks are indicated only if there is a drop of fluid.
A damp condition does not indicate leakage.
MASTER CYLINDER CASTING
Visually check for a cracked master cylinder casting or brake fluid around the master cylinder. Leaks are indicated only if there is a drop of fluid.
A damp condition does not indicate leakage.
PRESSURE HOLD CHECK
With engine running at idle and the transmission in "Neutral", depress the brake pedal and hold a constant foot pressure on the pedal. If pedal
gradually falls away with the constant pressure, the master cylinder may be leaking internally.
PEDAL LINKAGE AND PUSHROD LENGTH INSPECTION
Check brake pedal travel.
NOTE: Rear brake adjustment must be correct to obtain correct brake pedal travel. If pedal travel is excessive, check and adjust rear brakes as
necessary.
If travel is incorrect, check for loose or binding pedal linkage and incorrect pushrod length. If both of these are satisfactory and brake pedal travel
is excessive or brake pedal falls away after brakes are applied, disassemble the master cylinder and check for:
-
Swollen, elongated or worn primary piston seal(s)
-
Piston bore pitted, porous or damaged
WARNING: If swollen seals are found, substandard or contaminated brake fluid is suspected. If fluid is contaminated, all components must be
disassembled and cleaned, pipes flushed and all rubber components replaced.
