Vehicle Speed Sensor: Description and Operation
Component Description
The vehicle speed sensor generates a signal for the speedometer. The speedometer consists of its own speed sensor, an ammeter (to move the needle),
stepper motor (to turn the odometer), and a driving circuit (printed circuit board).
The vehicle speed sensor is mounted to the transmission. The transmission pinion shaft generates four pulses per one rotation. The rate at which the
pulses are generated indicates the vehicle speed. The speed sensor in the speedometer uses the pulses to control how far and fast the needle moves and to
send vehicle speed information (4096 pulses per mile) to the ECM or PCM.
