In late July 1999, this tool will be shipped to your Service Manager and billed to your dealership.

DIAGNOSIS

1.

Check and adjust the cold tire pressures.

On 215/75R15 and 235/75R15 tires, make sure the pressure is 29 psi (2OOkPa).

^

On 245/70R16 tires, make sure the pressure is 26 psi (180 kPa).

2.

Warm up the tires by driving at 60 mph for at least 5 minutes.

3.

Hold the steering wheel at the 12 o'clock position with a pen between two fingers.

4.

With pen in hand, drive at 80 mph on a bumpy highway. If the steering wheel shimmies, the pen will move left and right more than 5 mm.

Does the pen move more than 5 mm? 

YES - Go to REPAIR PROCEDURE. 

NO - The vehicle does not have steering wheel shimmy.

Having the correct cold tire inflation pressures can help to minimize road vibration, but some vibration felt through the steering column, floor, or
seat is normal when you drive at high speeds on a bumpy or uneven road. Under these conditions, the lift and drop of the wheels can set up a
vibration that travels through the drivetrain and the body to the passenger's components.

Although rubber mounts are used to insulate drivetrain and body components, they cannot damp all vibration, nor can they compensate for
vibration created by damaged steering, suspension, or chassis components.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

NOTE: Wear eye protection when you are working under the vehicle and when you use compressed air.

Point the front wheels straight ahead, then raise the vehicle on a lift.
