Inspect the axle shaft for grooves in the seal contact area, and make sure the retainer is not bent. If the axle shaft or retainer are damaged, replace
them.

Install the backing plate and retainer on the axle shaft. Note the direction of the retainer.

Install the new axle seal on the axle shaft.

16.

Place the new wheel bearing on the axle with the outer bearing race toward the axle splines. Install the wheel bearing with the wheel bearing
installer and a hydraulic press.

17.

Install the new retainer ring with the wheel bearing installer and a hydraulic press.

18.

Install the snap ring.

19.

Install the axle shaft in the axle housing.

20.

Install the lock washers and nuts. Torque the nuts to 75 Nm (55 lb-ft).

21.

Install the parking brake cable and, on a 4WD vehicle, the parking brake shoes, or, on a 2WD vehicle, the drum brake shoes.

22.

Do steps 5 thru 21 on the other end of the axle housing.

Apply about a 4 mm diameter bead of Ultra Flange II to the sealing surface of the rear differential cover, and reinstall the cover. Torque the cover
bolts to 40 Nm (30 lb-ft).

24.

If the vehicle has a limited slip differential, pour one bottle of lubricant additive into the axle fill hole.

25.

Fill the axle to the bottom of the fill hole with 80W-90 GL-5 hypoid gear oil.
