SYMPTOM PULLEY-END CRANKSHAFT SEAL LEAK
Oil leaking from the driver's side of the engine, The leak may seem to be coming from the oil pump or the camshaft because the timing belt throws oil up
into those areas. However, always check the crank seal before you decide to replace the oil pump seals or camshaft seal.
PROBLEM
The retaining spring in the crank seal may have been pushed out of position during installation so it no longer holds the seal tightly against the crankshaft
.
CORRECTIVE ACTION
Replace the pulley-end crank seal.
1.
Remove the timing cover, belt, and pulley so you can get to the crank seal. If the timing belt is soaked with oil, replace it. Refer to pages 6-19 thru
6-21 in the 83 Prelude Service Manual for torque specs and timing belt removal, inspection, and reinstallation or replacement.
New Seal
2.
Remove the old seal; make sure you get the spring out too.
3.
Wipe off the sealing surfaces in the block and on the crank.
4.
Then apply a light coat of chassis grease to the crank and to the lip of the seal. Also fill the back of the seal with grease to help keep the spring in
place during installation. Leave the block dry.
5.
With its part number facing out, slip the new seal onto the crank, then gently tap it into position with driver 07947-SBO0200 until the driver
bottoms.
