Charge Lamp/Indicator: Testing and Inspection

    These models use a voltage regulator that is integral with the alternator. No provision for on-vehicle testing is provided. The following procedure is
for testing the charge warning light, but can be helpful for diagnosing the voltage regulator.

1.

Turn ignition switch to the On position, the charge warning light should be illuminated. If not, unplug the voltage regulator connector from the
alternator and connect the white/blue wire pin to ground, then proceed as follows:

a. If charge warning light is not illuminated, check fuses, warning light bulb, wire connectors and related wires for an open circuit. Repair as

necessary.

b. If the charge warning light is now illuminated, the regulator warning light relay is not operating properly and the voltage regulator should be

replaced.

Start engine and let idle, the charge warning light should go off. If the warning light does not go off, or stays on at idle and goes off as engine
speed increases, check alternator output. Refer to ``Current Output Test'' for procedure.
