Brake Shoe: Testing and Inspection
WARNING:

Never use an air hose or dry brush to clean brake assemblies.

Use an OSHA-approved vacuum cleaner to avoid breathing brake dust.

Contaminated brake linings or drums reduce stopping ability.
1. Check the wheel cylinder for leakage.
2. Check the brake linings for cracking glazing, wear or contamination.
Brake Lining Thickness Check
3. Measure the brake lining thickness.
Brake Lining Thickness:
<Cars with M/T, Except Coupe 1.6L M/T:>
Standard: 4.5 mm (0.18 in)
Service Limit: 2.0 mm (0.08 in)
<Cars with A/T, Coupe 1.6L M/T:>
Standard: 4.0 mm (0.16 in)
Service Limit: 2.0 mm (0.08 in)
NOTE: Measurement does not include brake shoe thickness.
4. If the brake lining thickness is less than service limit, replace the brake linings as a set.
5. Check the bearings in the hub unit for smooth operation.
Brake Drum Diameter
6. Measure the inside diameter of the brake drum using inside vernier calipers.
Drum Inside Diameter:
<Cars with M/T, Except Coupe 1.6L M/T:>
Standard: 180 mm (7.09 in)
Service Limit: 181 mm (7.13 in)
<Cars with A/T, Coupe 1.6L M/T:>
