Flapping Noise from the Engine
PROBLEM
The timing belt makes a flapping noise because it's improperly tensioned. The noise is most noticeable between 1,800 and 2,600 rpm.
CORRECTIVE ACTION
Replace the timing belt and the auto-tensioner.

DIAGNOSIS
While holding the engine between 1,800 and 2,600 rpm, listen for a flapping noise near the timing belt cover.

If you hear the noise, go to REPAIR PROCEDURE.

If the noise comes from another area of the engine, disregard this service bulletin, and follow normal troubleshooting procedures.
REPAIR PROCEDURE
1.
Replace the timing belt and the auto-tensioner (see pages 6-14 thru 6-18 of the 1997-99 Prelude Service Manual).
2.
Verify that the noise is gone.
