Air Bag(s) Arming and Disarming: Service and Repair

DISARMING
The air bag system is equipped with a back-up power source which can deploy the air bag for up to ten minutes after the ignition switch is
turned off and the battery ground cable is disconnected. Servicing components near the air bag system during this period may result in
accidental deployment and personal injury.

Disarm air bag system as follows:

1. Record audio system memory, clock memory, and air bag diagnostic codes.
2. Disconnect battery ground cable.
3. Place key in lock position.
4. Wait at least ten minutes before beginning service.

ARMING

1. Connect battery ground cable.
2. Turn ignition switch to the On position.
3. If air bag lamp on instrument cluster flashes for approximately six seconds and then turns off, system is functioning properly.
4. If lamp flashes for more than six seconds after ignition is turned on or lamp comes on during any ignition cycle, system is malfunctioning.
5. Reset audio system memory and clock memory.

PRECAUTION

The air bag system is equipped with a back-up power source which can deploy air bag for up to ten minutes after the ignition switch is turned off and the
battery ground cable is disconnected. Servicing components near the air bag system during this period may result in accidental deployment and personal
injury. To avoid injury to yourself or others during air bag servicing, extreme care must be used. Perform all service operations in the correct sequence to
avoid accidental deployment of the air bag system. Further, if a mistake is made in servicing the air bag system, it is possible the air bag may fail to
operate when required. Carefully follow and observe all of the following precautions:

1. When servicing a vehicle with an air bag system, refer to air bag disarming procedure in this section, prior to lifting vehicle or servicing

components near air bag system.

2. Wear gloves and safety glasses when handling an air bag.
3. Do not expose air bag module to temperature in excess of 93° C (200°F).
4. When carrying a live (undeployed) air bag module, ensure bag and trim cover are pointed away from you. Never carry inflator module by the wires

or connector on the underside of the module.
