IDLE POSITION SWITCH TROUBLESHOOTING
A sticking throttle body Idle Position Switch, p/n 35130-33000, can cause continuous or intermittent poor cold driveability, poor acceleration, surging
and/or bucking.
An Idle Position Switch which sticks "ON" could also set an MPI fault code 14 (Throttle Position Sensor) and illuminate the "Check Engine" light, but a
code may not always be set. DO NOT replace the Throttle Position Sensor before checking the idle switch operation.
OPERATION
The Idle Position Switch is a contact type switch which senses accelerator operation.
Idle Position Switch operation check:
1.
Connect the Multi-Use Tester (MUT), select the appropriate vehicle, go into the MPI service data and look at the Idle Switch operation, item no.
26.
2.
With your foot off of the accelerator pedal (at idle), the switch should read "ON".
3.
When you lightly push on the pedal, the switch should go "OFF".
4.
Repeat this process 5 or 6 times.
If the switch does not switch back and forth between "OFF" and "ON" as you push and release the accelerator pedal, it could be caused by the following:

Idle Position Switch out of adjustment

Accelerator cable or cruise control cable out of adjustment

Idle Position Switch malfunction
^
Wiring from ECU to Idle Position Switch connector grounded or open
