ENGINE OIL APPEARANCE IN NEW AND LONG TERM STORAGE VEHICLES
DESCRIPTION:
Two conditions may affect engine oil appearance in new vehicles and in vehicles in long term storage.
1)
New, low mileage vehicles often have engine oil that seems discolored, dark brown or black, and may smell of gasoline.
2)
Vehicles stored for long periods of time may appear to have a "Water- Oil-Emulsification" usually seen on the oil filler cap.
CAUSE:
These conditions result when the engine is run for brief periods of time, followed by long periods of storage, during which the engine is not run very
often.
Unburned fuel and black soot can accumulate in the engine oil, causing oil discoloration and gasoline odor.
"Water-Oil-Emulsification" is a result of moisture formed from blow-by gas mixing with the engine oil. A frequently driven vehicle will not exhibit this
condition because the heat generated during operation dissipates the moisture.
CORRECTION:
The conditions listed above are "normal" and require no special attention. In severe cases, if the engine operation is noisy and/or the oil appears to be
excessively thin, thick, or contaminated, the oil should be changed and the engine systems diagnosed as required.
