Subject
SULFUR (ROTTEN EGG) EXHAUST ODOR
DESCRIPTION:
A sulfur or "rotten egg" odor may be noticed from the vehicle tail pipe during certain engine operating conditions. This condition is normal and is related
to the sulfur content of gasoline which is released during the combustion process. In many cases the odor may be reduced by changing the brand of
gasoline (as discussed in TSB # 95-30-002), and will often diminish as the vehicle ages.
DIAGNOSIS:
Vehicles produced after 6/17/95 are equipped with catalytic converters that contain the element nickel (Ni) to help reduce the sulfur odor.
The nickel containing catalytic converters can be identified by the lot number stamped into the converter housing. The lot numbers are a date code that is
read by year, month and day.
If you experience a complaint that a vehicle produces a sulfur "rotten egg" odor, check the lot number against the following nickel containing catalytic
converter lot numbers.
Accent - Lot Number 950608 (converter produced June 8, 1995)
Elantra - Lot Number 950609 (converter produced June 9, 1995)
Sonata - Lot Number 950614 (converter produced June 14, 1995)
