Alternator: Testing and Inspection
Circuit Voltage Drop Test of Alternator Output Wire
Ensure alternator drive belt is properly adjusted and battery is fully charged before performing the following procedures.

1. With ignition switch in Off position, disconnect battery ground cable, then disconnect alternator output lead from alternator B terminal and
connect positive lead of an ammeter to B terminal, Fig. 2. Connect negative lead to disconnected output wire.
2. Connect positive lead of a digital voltmeter to alternator B terminal and battery positive terminal, then connect battery ground cable.
3. Start engine and turn on headlamps, adjusting RPM until ammeter reads20A and voltmeter reads 0.02 volt maximum.
4. If voltmeter reading obtained in previous step is greater than 0.02 volt, check alternator output wire for loose connection, discoloration due to
overheating, etc., and repeat test if necessary.
