Brake Shoe: Service and Repair

REMOVAL

1.

Raise and support vehicle, then remove wheel/tire assembly.

2.

Remove brake drum.

3.

Remove clip from shoe-to-shoe spring.

4.

Remove shoe retainer, shoe-to-shoe and shoe hold-down springs, Fig. 1.

5.

Remove shoes and adjuster as an assembly.

6.

Disconnect parking brake lever from secondary shoe.

INSPECTION

1.

Check backing plate for wear or damage. Replace as necessary.

2.

Check wheel cylinder for fluid leakage. Repair or replace cylinder as necessary.

3.

Check shoe-to-shoe spring for sagging or insufficient tension. Replace spring as necessary.

4.

Check inside diameter of brake drum. If I.D. is greater than 7.20 inches, drum is beyond wear limit and should be replaced.

INSTALLATION

1.

Apply suitable grease to backing plate shoe contact surfaces.

2.

Install primary shoe and hold-down spring.

3.

Connect parking brake lever to secondary shoe, then install shoe and hold-down spring.

4.

Install adjuster and remaining springs, then the shoe-to-shoe clip.

5.

Adjust shoe outside diameter to 7.06-7.07 inches, then install brake drum.

6.

Bleed brake system, if necessary, then adjust brakes.
