Wheel Bearing: Service and Repair

REMOVAL

1.

Remove dust cover, cotter pin, driveshaft retaining nut and washer, then raise and support vehicle.

2.

Remove wheel/tire assembly.

3.

Remove brake caliper and support with suitable wire.

4.

Remove ball joint stud retaining nut, then separate ball joint from steering knuckle.

5.

Remove retaining nut, then separate tie rod from steering knuckle.

6.

Remove driveshaft from hub.

7.

Remove steering knuckle to strut retaining nuts and bolts, then remove steering knuckle, brake disc, hub and bearings as an assembly.

SERVICE

1.

Using tools 09517-21500 and 09517-21600 or equivalents, separate hub from steering knuckle.

2.

Remove brake disc from hub.

3.

Using tools 09532-11000, 09532-11301 and 09517-21100 or equivalents, remove outer bearing inner race from hub.

4.

Remove oil seal and inner bearing inner race from steering knuckle.

5.

Drive bearing outer races from steering knuckle using suitable drift. If either inner or outer races require replacement, they must be replaced
as a set.

6.

Apply suitable grease to outer surface of bearing outer race, then drive race into steering knuckle.

7.

Install brake disc to hub and torque retaining bolts to 36-43 ft. lbs.

8.

Apply suitable grease to bearings and inside surface of hub, then position outer bearing inner race into steering knuckle.

9.

Drive hub side oil seal into steering knuckle, then apply suitable grease to seal lip and hub contact areas.

10.

Install inner bearing into knuckle.

11.

Using tool 09517-21500 or equivalent, assemble hub to steering knuckle. Torque nut on tool to 144-188 ft. lbs., then rotate hub to seat bearing.

12.

Measure bearing starting torque. Starting torque should be 11 inch lbs. If starting torque is 0 inch lbs., measure hub axial play. Axial play should
be .004 inch with tool nut torqued to specification as in previous step.

13.

If starting torque or hub axial play is not within specification, repeat service procedures.

14.

Remove service tool, then apply suitable grease to bearing and inside surface of steering knuckle.

15.

Drive driveshaft side oil seal into steering knuckle until it contacts bearing outer race, then apply suitable grease to lip of seal.

INSTALLATION

    Reverse removal procedure to install. Torque brake caliper to steering knuckle retaining bolts to 43-58 ft. lbs., strut to steering knuckle retaining nuts
and bolts to 54-65 ft. lbs. and tie rod to knuckle retaining nut to 11-25 ft. lbs. Lower vehicle to floor, then torque ball joint stud to knuckle retaining nut
to 43-52 ft. lbs. and driveshaft retaining nut to 144-187 ft. lbs.
