DESCRIPTION:
Some 2001-03 Santa Fe vehicles with automatic transaxles produced prior to December 21, 2002 may exhibit a whine noise from the transaxle when:

Driving at a steady speed between approximately 30-40 mph
^
Decelerating at light throttle between approximately 30-40 mph
The mass damper is installed on all Santa Fe vehicles beginning with December 21, 2002 production.
VEHICLES AFFECTED:
^
Model: SANTA FE 2.4L and 2.7L vehicles with automatic transaxles
^
Affected vehicle production date range: Produced before December 21, 2002 Affected VIN range: Produced before KM85C13D43U436136
SERVICE PROCEDURE:
1.
Open the hood.
2.
Remove the six bolts and remove the engine cover (2.7L only).
3.
Release the four clamps to the air cleaner cover and remove the cover.
4.
Remove the air cleaner filter.
5.
Loosen the clamp to the lower air inlet duct.
6.
Remove the three bolts and remove the air cleaner body.
7.
Remove the air breather hose from the air intake duct.
8.
Loosen the clamp and remove the air intake duct from the throttle body.
9.
Set the air intake duct on top of the brake master cylinder
NOTE
It is not necessary to disconnect the air flow sensor connector.
10.
Assemble the mass damper with two bolts as shown. Insert the screws only two turns.
10.
Place the damper on the shift cable approximately 10 inches from the shift cable bracket. Install the other two bolts.
11.
Using a hex wrench, tighten the 4 bolts securely to approximately 12 lb.in.
NOTE
Make sure the damper does not rub against the transaxle case or cooling hoses.
12.
Confirm the shift cable moves freely.
