Brake Caliper: Service and Repair

Removal

1.

Remove brake pads as described previously.

2.

Disconnect and cap brake line(s).

3.

Remove caliper attaching bolts and caliper assembly from steering knuckle.

Disassembly

Remove sleeve, sleeve boot and pin boots, Fig. 1.

2.

Protect fingers with shop towel, then blow piston from caliper bore with compressed air.

3.

Remove piston boot, then pry piston seal from caliper bore using a suitable screwdriver.

Assembly

1.

Clean all components with suitable cleaner.

2.

Inspect caliper bore, piston and carrier for damage or excessive wear.

3.

Apply rubber grease to new piston seal, then install piston seal in caliper bore.

4.

Assemble the piston and piston boots as follows:
a. Apply rubber grease to cylinder inner face, sliding surface of piston and piston boots.
b. Install piston boots on piston.
c. Insert piston boots to inner groove of caliper and slide piston into caliper.

5.

Assemble sliding components as follows:
a. Apply rubber grease to sliding surface of sleeve and pin, sliding bore of caliper, pin boots and sleeve boots.
b. Insert boots into grooves of cylinder.

Installation

1.

Install caliper assembly and attaching bolts on steering column. Tighten caliper to steering knuckle attaching bolts to specifications.

2.

Connect brake line(s). Tighten brake hose mounting bolt to specifications.

3.

Assemble brake pads in caliper as described previously.
