Steering Column: Service and Repair

REMOVAL

1.

Remove steering wheel.

2.

Remove lower crash pad, then disconnect rheostat connector.

3.

Remove column shroud, then disconnect remaining electrical connectors.

4.

Remove multifunction switch.

5.

Remove universal joint and pinion bolt, Fig. 2.

6.

Remove bolts securing column bracket to frame, then remove steering column shaft assembly.

DISASSEMBLY

1.

Remove universal joint.

2.

Remove steering lock by cutting slot in mounting screw heads and bracket, then unscrew and remove steering wheel lock.

3.

If equipped, remove tilt steering lever and mounting bracket.

4.

Further disassembly is not possible.

ASSEMBLY

1.

Reverse disassembly procedure.

2.

Align steering lock with column boss, then insert ignition key to ensure steering lock operation.

INSTALLATION

1.

Install upper universal joint and assembly into vehicle. Torque universal joint to 11-14 ft. lbs.

2.

Align universal joint to steering gear and column shaft, then temporarily tighten.

3.

Mount steering column shaft to mounting frame.

4.

Torque universal joint to gear box to 11-14 ft. lbs.
