Suspension Strut / Shock Absorber: Service and Repair
Front

Replace

1.

Raise and support front of vehicle, then remove wheel and tire assembly.

2.

Disconnect brake hose and tube bracket from strut.

3.

Remove strut assembly to wheel housing and steering knuckle attaching bolts and nuts, then remove strut assembly.

4.

Reverse procedure to install.

Disassembly

1.

Using tool J-38402 or equivalent, compress coil spring.

2.

Using tool 09546-21000 to hold spring upper seat in position, remove strut upper retaining nut.

3.

Remove insulator, spring seat, coil spring and bumper.

Inspection

    Check all strut assembly components for wear or damage and replace as necessary.

Assembly

Compress coil spring using spring compressor 09546-11001 or equivalent, then position coil spring on strut. Position spring identification mark
toward steering knuckle side of strut.

2.

Install bumper, upper seal, upper seat assembly, insulator and washer, Fig, 5. Align D-shaped hole in upper spring seat with notch in rod.

3.

Seat upper and lower ends of spring in spring seat grooves.

4.

Using tool 09546-21000 or equivalent to hold spring upper seat in position, install upper retaining nut and tighten to specifications.

5.

Pack upper spring bearing with multi-purpose NLGI No. 2 grease and install cap. Use care not to allow grease to come in contact with insulator
rubber.
