INTERMITTENT SLIPPAGE IN FOURTH GEAR (OVERDRIVE)

CONDITION: 

Intermittent slipping in overdrive. Fault codes are probably NOT set.

CAUSE: 

The Transfer port tube in the valve body may be out of position. It may be pushed too far into the valve body, restricting the flow of fluid and resulting in
partial pressure application, or if the transaxle has previously been repaired, it may have been misplaced or not re-installed.

REBUILD PROGRAM

If your dealership participates in the automatic transaxle rebuild program, the transaxle is not to be taken apart. Check it with the transaxle tester per the
instructions. If the problem is determined to be mechanical (transaxle will not go into fourth gear when commanded by the tester), replace the transaxle.

INSPECTION/CORRECTION:

1.

Check the end clutch pressure - pressure will below or zero in the event that a transfer port tube is out of place. (specification = 118 - 128 psi)

2.

Remove the valve body and check for transfer port tube position.

3.

Check the end clutch assembly pistons for damage and the seals for wear.

4.

Check the end clutch valve and spring in the valve body for sticking. The valve can be cleaned and reinstalled instead of being replaced.

5.

If the conditions listed above are not present, remove the end clutch, and visually inspect it and air test it.

After the cause of the fourth gear slippage has been found, check the end clutch condition and replace it, if burnt. Continued driving with excessive
overdrive slippage can result in damage to the end clutch.
