Before removing rocker arms and camshafts, check auto adjusters for freeplay. Insert a piece of wire through bleed hole in rocker arm and carefully
push adjuster check ball down. While pushing down on check ball, move rocker arm up and down to check for freeplay. If freeplay exists, replace
adjuster.
1.
Install auto lash adjuster retainer tool No. MD998443-01 or equivalent, as shown in Fig. 9.
2.
Remove distributor housing attaching bolts, then distributor housing and O-ring.
3.
Remove camshaft bearing cap bolts, then rocker arm, rocker shafts and bearing cap as an assembly.
4.
Remove camshafts, oil seals and end seals.
5.
Lubricate camshaft journals and cams with engine oil, then install camshafts on cylinder head.
6.
Align camshaft bearing caps with arrows (depending on cylinder bank) as shown in Fig. 10.
7.
Identify number 1 bearing cap as shown in Fig. 11, then install rocker shafts into bearing cap 1 with end notches positioned as shown in Fig. 12,
and that machined portion of rocker shaft is facing down.
8.
Install rocker arms, bearing caps and springs onto rocker arm shafts.
9.
Temporarily install number 4 bearing cap bolts to retain assembly.
10.
Apply a suitable sealant at bearing cap ends as shown in Fig. 10.
11.
Install rocker arm shaft assembly, ensuring that arrow on bearing cap and arrow mark on cylinder head are pointing in the same direction, Fig. 10.
12.
Torque bearing caps as follows:
a. Numbers 3, 2, 1, then 4 to 7 ft. lbs.
b. In the same sequence mentioned above, torque bearing cap bolts to 14-15 ft. lbs.
13.
Install distributor housing and tighten bolts to specifications.
14.
Lubricate camshaft oil seals lip with engine oil, then using camshaft oil seal installer tool No. MD998713-01 or equivalent, install camshaft oil
seals.
15.
Using seal installer tool No. MD998714 or equivalent, install end seals.
