Rotten Egg Exhaust Odor
DESCRIPTION:
A sulfur or "rotten egg" odor may be noticed from the vehicle tail pipe during certain engine operating conditions.
CAUSE:
Some brands of gasoline contain more sulfur than others. Under certain operating conditions the sulfur may collect in the catalytic converter. When
engine operating parameters change, the sulfur that has collected can be expelled as hydrogen sulfide H2S. Hydrogen sulfide has a characteristic "rotten
egg" odor.
Please advise customers of the following information, which may assist them in reducing this odor.
1.
Change brand of fuel. The sulfur content of gasoline may vary between gasoline brand names and different areas of the country.
2.
Change grade of fuel. Premium grade fuel will usually have a lower sulfur content than regular grade unleaded fuel.
3.
A gasoline brand or grade change may take several tanks before a reduction of the condition can be detected.
4.
The hydrogen sulfide odor will often diminish as the catalytic converter ages. This reduction is often noticed on vehicles that have accumulated
approximately 6,000 miles.
