A/C O-RING REPLACEMENT
A/C O-ring kits are being supplied to dealers to resolve refrigerant leaks on Sonatas. There are two different kits; one for V6 Sonatas and one for 2.0L,
2.4L Sonatas. The kits contain O-rings for the entire A/C system (12 O-rings for V6, 10 O-rings for 2.0L & 2.4L). These new O-rings are thicker, 8.5
mm vs 8.0 mm, than the previous one. Both the new and previous O-rings are green.
The A/C O-ring will be supplied to each dealer in kit form on a one time basis. After the initial kits are used up, dealers will then revert to normal parts
ordering.
The O-ring replacement is to be performed on customer vehicles produced between 7/88 and 3/91 on an as needed basis.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1.
Evacuate refrigerant from the air conditioning system using an approved refrigerant recovery machine.
WARNING:
It is irresponsible and illegal to release R-12 refrigerant into the atmosphere. Please be responsible and recycle refrigerant.
2.
Disconnect all spring lock coupling (SLC) joints and remove the O-rings (do not replace Orings at the bolted flare fittings).
3.
Look or feel inside of the female SLC fitting to see if the O-rings on the male fitting have worn a groove. If a groove can be seen or felt (not just a
shiny spot) inside the tube, it must be replaced.
4.
Lubricate the new O-rings with A/C compressor oil and then install.
CAUTION:
Do not use any other type of oil or lubricant.
5.
Reconnect the A/C lines per shop manual procedures.
6.
Evacuate and re-charge the A/C system with 1.9 to 2.1 lbs. of refrigerant according to shop manual.
