THROTTLE VALVE INSPECTION AND CLEANING

This bulletin is being issued to remind service technicians that when servicing vehicles with driveability problems, such as rough idle or engine stalling,
to inspect the throttle body for carbon deposits. Remove the air intake hose from the throttle body and visually check for a heavy carbon deposit build up
(ridge) around the resting area of the throttle valve blade on both sides. (manually open throttle valve blade for inspection)

Such a build up of carbon alters the physical design of the throttle body bore and throttle valve blade, restricting or even cutting off the supply of oxygen
to the combustion chamber when the throttle valve blade is in the idle position. The result can be driveability problems.

It is important to note, that just spraying carburetor cleaner into the throttle valve blade area may not clean the throttle deposits sufficiently. To ensure
effective cleaning, it is recommended that the throttle body be removed and manually cleaned by spraying carburetor cleaner, such as Hyundai
Carburetor Cleaner P/N 00212-19130, onto a rag and into the throttle body bore and throttle valve blade area. Allow the cleaning formula enough time to
effectively penetrate the carbon deposits. Then wipe the throttle body bore area and throttle valve blade on both sides with your rag, attempting to
remove as much carbon as possible. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO SCRATCH OR ETCH THE CARBON DEPOSITS, AS DAMAGE TO THE
THROTTLE BODY BORE OR THROTTLE VALVE BLADE MAY OCCUR.

The following items should be examined, serviced and replaced at regular service intervals to reduce excessive crankcase vapors that can cause carbon
deposit build up in the throttle body bore and throttle valve blade areas.

Engine oil - low oil level, dirty, contaminated, thinned out engine oil.

After cleaning, re-install the throttle body and start the engine. Verity that idle speed & TPS are within the manufacturer's specifications. Please refer to
the appropriate Shop Manual for service adjustment procedures.
