Steering Column: Service and Repair
REMOVAL
Fig. 3 Exploded View Of Steering Column Assembly
1.
Remove steering wheel.
2.
Remove steering column lower and upper shrouds, then lower cover.
3.
Disconnect remaining electrical connectors, then remove multifunction switch.
4.
Remove steering column mounting bolts.
5.
Remove bolts retaining coupling and universal joint from gear box, Fig. 3, then remove.
6.
Remove dust cover bolts, then remove steering column shaft along with universal joint and dust cover.
DISASSEMBLY
1.
Remove coupling and universal joint from column assembly.
2.
Remove springs.
3.
If necessary remove steering lock by driving out retainer using suitable tools.
4.
Remove steering column assembly cover.
5.
Separate lower steering shaft from tilt point.
ASSEMBLY
1.
Reverse disassembly procedure.
2.
Match up groove on shaft with hook on steering lock in steering column.
INSTALLATION
1.
Apply suitable lubricant groove inside of bearing and mating surface of boot and cover assembly.
2.
Connect lower shaft and joint assembly. Secure to steering gear, then steering shaft. Torque bolts to 11-14 ft. lbs.
3.
Install dust cover, then steering column assembly to column member assembly.
