Sonata GL V6-2.5L (1999)
1. Check the crankshaft journals and pins for damage, uneven wear and cracks. Also check the oil holes for restrictors. Repair or replace any
defective part.
2. Inspect for out-of-roundess and taper of the crankshaft journal and pin.
Standard value:
Crankshaft journal O.D.: 61.982-62.000 mm (2.4402-2.4409 inch)
Crankshaft pin O.D.: 47.982-48.000 mm (1.8891-1.8898 inch)
Main Bearings and Connecting Rod Bearings
Visually inspect each bearing for peeling, melt, seizure and improper contact. Replace any defective bearings.
Oil clearance Measurement
To check for oil clearance by measure the outside diameter of crankshaft journal and the inside diameter of the bearing. The clearance can be obtained
by calculating the difference between the measured outside and inside diameters.
Standard value:
Oil clearance:
Crankshaft main bearing: 0.004-0.022 mm (0.0002-0.0009 inch)
Connecting rod bearing: 0.018-0.036 mm (0.0007-0.0014 inch)
Plastigauge Method
Plastigauge may be used to measure the clearance.
1. Remove oil and grease and any other dirt from the bearings and journals.
2. Cut the plastigauge to the same length as the width of the bearing and place it in parallel with the journal, avoiding the oil holes.
3. Install the crankshaft, bearings and caps and tighten them to the specified torques. During this operation, do not turn the crankshaft. Remove the
caps. Measure the width of the plastigauge at the widest part by using the scale printed on the gauge package.
If the clearance exceeds the repair limit, the bearing should be replaced or an undersize bearing should be used.
When installing a new crankshaft, be sure to use standard size bearings.
Should the standard clearance not be obtained even after bearing replacement, the journal and pin should be ground to undersize and a bearing of
the corresponding undersize should be installed.
