Subject
1999 2.5L V6 SONATA OXYGEN SENSORS
DESCRIPTION:
The 1999 2.5L V6 Sonata utilizes two small catalytic converters integrated into the exhaust manifolds. Each of the catalysts utilizes two oxygen sensors
(one upstream and one downstream) for a total of four oxygen sensors on the vehicle.
When diagnosing oxygen sensor related conditions on the 1999 2.5L V6 Sonata, it is important to keep in mind the following changes.
The 1999 2.5L V6 Sonata utilizes a new type of oxygen sensor. The defining characteristics of this new type of sensor are:
1.
The voltage range is from 0.0 to 5.0 volts. (All other Hyundai vehicles' oxygen sensors have a voltage range of 0.0 to 1.0 volts.)
2.
HIGH voltage (above 2.5 volts) signifies a LEAN mixture. (On all other Hyundai vehicles, high oxygen sensor voltage signifies a rich mixture.)
3.
LOW voltage (below 2.5 volts) signifies a RICH mixture. (On all other Hyundai vehicles, low oxygen sensor voltage signifies a lean mixture.)
4.
ONLY the 1999 2.5L V6 Sonata uses the new type of oxygen sensors.
