Valve Clearance: Adjustments

Before attempting any measurement, ensure valve assembly is properly seated in cylinder head.
1. Install gauge plate tool No. J38957-1, or equivalent, into tapped holes at camshaft journals and secure to cylinder head.
2. Place collar tool No. J38957-2, or equivalent, onto dial indicator. Ensure dished side of collar is face up toward dial indicator.
3. Secure collar to dial indicator.
4. Place dial indicator and collar over No. 1 intake valve, on shim side.
5. Slide tip of dial indicator on end of valve stem using the access hole.
6. Zero dial indicator with collar on gauge plate.
7. Move dial indicator and collar to adjacent hole in gauge plate and place tip of the indicator in the center of rocker arm guide. Record this reading

as the T(1) dimension.

8. Match the T(1) dimension (in inches) with the shim chart (in millimeters), Fig. 17.
9. Select the closest size shim to the T(1) dimension.

10. Repeat procedure for remaining cylinders, then install shims is proper locations.
