A/T CHIRP NOISE DURING SHIFTING

SERVICE INFORMATION

Some owners of 1991-92 G20 vehicles may complain about a chirp noise during shifts. The noise can usually be heard on 2-3 upshifts at less than
one-half throttle.

Initially, a countermeasure input shaft and high clutch assembly were developed. Although this was effective, a quicker and equally effective
countermeasure has been developed. An ATF Treatment can be added to the automatic transmission fluid with no parts replacement.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1.

Before adding the ATF Treatment, drive the vehicle to confirm the incident and bring the automatic transmission fluid up to normal operating
temperatures.

2.

Check automatic transmission fluid level using the "HOT" range on the dipstick at fluid levels of 50 to 80°C (122 to l76°F) after vehicle has been
driven approximately 5 minutes in urban areas. The following checking procedure is provided for your reference.

a.

Park vehicle on level surface and set parking brake.

b.

Start engine and move selector lever through each gear range, ending in "P".

c.

Check fluid with engine idling.

d.

Remove dipstick and wipe it clean with a lint-free paper.

e.

Re-insert dipstick into dipstick tube as far as it will go.

f.

Remove dipstick and note reading.

g.

Also check for fluid contamination and odor which may indicate another incident.

3.

If adding 200 ml of fluid will overfill the transaxle, turn the engine "OFF", remove the line pressure plug and allow 200 ml to drain off before
adding the ATF Treatment. Do not overfill.

4.

Add ATF Treatment (P/N 31003-31X61) and test drive to confirm effectiveness.

5.

Indicate in the vehicle maintenance log that ATF Treatment was added to the transmission and include date and mileage.

6.

If the ATF Treatment is not effective, replace the high clutch assembly according to 1TB91-038. Do not add a second bottle of ATF Treatment --
the high clutch plates may be glazed and must be replaced.
