1. Adjust pinion rotating torque as follows:

a. Set rack to Neutral position without fluid in gear.
b. Coat adjusting screw with locking sealant and install, then lightly tighten locknut.
c. Tighten adjusting screw and torque to 43-52 inch lbs., then loosen adjusting screw and torque to 1.7 inch lbs., Fig. 8.
d. Move rack over its entire stroke several times, then measure pinion rotating torque with range of 180° from Neutral position. Stop gear at point

of maximum torque.

e. Loosen adjusting screw, then torque to 43 inch lbs.
f.

Loosen adjusting screw by 50°-110°.

g. Prevent adjusting screw from turning, then tighten locknut to specification.

2. Measure pinion rotating torque as follows:

a. Using suitable inch pound torque wrench, average rotating torque should be 6.9-11.3 inch lbs., with a maximum torque increment of 3.5 inch

lbs. Maximum rotating torque should not exceed 16 inch Lbs.

b. If pinion rotating torque is not within specification, adjust again. If pinion rotating torque is still out of specification after readjustment, replace

steering gear assembly.

3. Check rack sliding force on vehicle as follows:
a. Install steering gear on vehicle.
b. Do not connect tie-rod to knuckle arm.
c. Connect all piping and fill with steering fluid.
d. Start engine and bleed air completely, then disconnect steering column lower joint from gear.
e. Keep engine at idle and ensure steering fluid has reach normal operating temperature.

Using suitable spring tension gauge, pull tie-rod slowly, ensuring average rack sliding force is 49-62 lbs of pressure. Maximum pressure
should be no more than 9 lbs. of pressure beyond specified value, Fig. 9.

g. If rack sliding force is not within specifications, readjust.
h. If rack sliding force is still out of specification after readjustment, replace gear assembly.
