Wheel Bearing: Service and Repair

1. Raise and support vehicle, then remove brake caliper and rotor.
2. Remove wheel hub from spindle, Fig. 5.
3. Remove grease seal and snap ring, then press out bearing and race as a set.
4. Reverse procedure to install noting the following:

a. Press new bearing into wheel hub; maximum load is 3.3 tons. Do not press inner race of wheel bearing assembly or apply oil or grease to

mating surfaces of wheel bearing outer race and wheel hub.

b. Tighten wheel bearing locknut to specifications, then turn wheel hub several times in both direction to properly seat bearing.
c. Attach spring balance to wheel hub bolt and pull at a speed of 10 mph to measure rotation torque. Rotation torque should be 2.2-18.9 inch lbs.,

spring balance indication should be 0.9-8.4 ft. lbs. If bearing preload is not within specifications, replace wheel bearing assembly.
