Fuel Pressure: Testing and Inspection

WARNING:Before disconnecting fuel line, release fuel pressure from fuel line to eliminate danger.

Fuel Pump Fuse

1. Remove fuse for fuel pump.

NOTE: To obtain an accurate fuel pressure reading the engine must by running. Basic fuel pump operation can be verified in a no start condition
by observing gauge reading while cranking engine. Fuel pressure should be approximately 299.1 kPa (43.4 psi). 

2. Start engine.
3. After engine stalls, crank it two or three times to release all fuel pressure.
4. Turn ignition switch off and reinstall fuel pump fuse.

Fuel Pressure Gauge Installation

Disconnect fuel line from fuel filter and connect a suitable pressure gauge as shown.

5. Start engine and check for fuel leaks. Read the indication of fuel pressure gauge.

At Idle: With fuel pressure regulator valve vacuum hose CONNECTED.

Approximately 235 kPa (34 psi)

With fuel pressure regulator valve vacuum hose DISCONNECTED.

Approximately 299.1 kPa (43.4 psi)

Stop engine and disconnect fuel pressure regulator vacuum hose from intake manifold.

7. Plug intake manifold with a rubber cap.
8. Connect variable vacuum source to fuel pressure regulator.

9. Start engine and read indication of fuel pressure gauge as vacuum is changed.

Fuel pressure should decrease as vacuum increases. If fuel pressure does not respond to the application of vacuum, check fuel return line for
restrictions prior to replacing fuel pressure regulator. If fuel pressure stays constantly low, check fuel filter for restrictions.
