Detach both tie rods from the knuckle arms (refer to Figure 1).

3.

Start and run engine at idle to make sure steering fluid has reached normal operating temperature.

4.

Using a pull gauge (Kent-Moore P/N J 35999 or equivalent), measure the rack sliding force on both the right and left hand tie rods as follows:

a. Center the steering wheel.

b. Connect the pull gauge to the tie rod using heavy gauge wire, such as a coat hanger (see Figure 2).

C. Slowly pull on the gauge while the steering wheel is being watched for movement (turning).

d. When the steering wheel first starts to move, take the pull gauge reading.

e. Compare the right and left hand readings. Specification: 40 - 48 lb (18 - 22 kg). Target is 44 lb (20 kg).

f.

If either the right or left hand sliding force is below specification, adjust the rack sliding force using the "Steering Rack Sliding Force - Adjust"
procedure.

Steering Rack Sliding Force - Adjust

1.

Loosen the adjusting lock nut using the special tool (Kent-Moore P/N J 39603).

2.

Loosen the adjusting screw using a 1/2" drive tool, such as a breaker bar or ratchet.

3.

Coat the adjusting screw threads with thread compound (Three Bond 111B, Loctite Lock & Seal, or equivalent).
