Prior to replacing the valve cover, inspect the valve rocker arm cover for an identification mark. (Figure 1) This raised cylindrical mark should be
located on the rear end (near the firewall) of the valve rocker arm cover, toward the intake manifold side of the engine.
If the vehicle already has a valve rocker arm cover with this identification mark, do not replace the valve rocker arm cover. Skip to Step 3 of this
bulletin to review the conditions listed and proceed with diagnostics in the engine section of the Workshop Manual.

Install a revised valve rocker arm cover (P/N 8-24577-253-0) which includes the rocker arm cover gasket using the procedures outlined below.
REMOVAL
A.
Record any radio presets (if equipped) and disconnect the battery (-).
B.
Drain engine coolant.
C.
Remove the air cleaner resonator.
D.
Remove the PCV hose.
E.
Disconnect the spark plug wires. (Be sure to mark their position prior to removal.)
F.
Remove the spark plug wire retainer.
G.
Remove the throttle body.
H.
Remove the heater hose bracket.
I.
Remove the air cleaner resonator bracket.
J.
Remove the bracket at the rear of the valve cover.
K.
Remove the thermostat housing assembly.
L.
Remove the valve cover bolts and valve cover.
INSTALLATION
A.
Install a new valve rocker arm cover (P/N 8-24577-253-0) with supplied gasket.
B.
Reinstall the thermostat housing assembly.
C.
Reinstall all brackets previously removed.
D.
Reinstall the throttle body.
E.
Reinstall the spark plug wires and retainer.
F.
Reinstall the PCV hose.
G.
Reinstall the air cleaner resonator and bracket.
H.
Refill engine coolant.
I.
Reconnect the battery and reprogram the radio presets and clock (if equipped).

If the vehicle owner still has a concern with engine oil consumption after it has been determined that the latest design cover is installed; further
inspection of engine components is necessary. Inspect other items that may cause increased oil consumption and repair as necessary. Possible
causes of increased oil consumption include the following conditions:

External oil leaks.
-
Incorrect oil level or improper reading of oil level indicator.
-
Improper oil viscosity.
-
Continuous high speed driving and/or severe usage such as towing, or driving in mountainous terrain.
-
Blocked cylinder head, cylinder head gasket, or engine block oil drain holes.
-
Valve guides and/or valve stem oil seals worn, or the seal omitted.
-
Piston rings broken, improperly installed, missing, worn, or not seated properly.
-
Pistons improperly installed or improperly fitted.
IMPORTANT: Inspection of the engine oil level should take place under the following conditions:
A.
The engine has been run until it has reached operating temperature
B.
Afterwards, the engine has been off for at least 5 minutes to allow for proper oil drain down
C.
Oil level is checked on a level surface
